To Team or Not to Team 

 

This year for AICE Media Studies I have decided to work on my portfolio independently. Why? Because doing the teamwork assignments like the “Social Media Peer Account” and the “Lost at Sea” have both showed me that it helps me more to work independently. Now, working with a partner is always great and helps you find the information you need, and helps you manage time. But, for me working independently helps me manage my own time and understand and do the part.  

The first teamwork assignment we did was the “Social Media Peer Account". The assignment was used to work together and explore someone else’s social media in the classroom and learn and answer the questions about them. I did a girl in class named Claire. She doesn’t really have social media like Facebook or twitter. She does have snapchat and it’s probably her most used app. She does also have Instagram, but she doesn't post a lot so they’re not the most resent posts, and it is not her top choice of a social media app to go on. So, the things I learned through looking through the couple posts she has on Instagram showed me that she really likes going to concerts and hanging out with friends and family. She seems to be extremely confident when she posts, but again the posts are from quite a while ago since she doesn’t use Instagram that much anymore. But she does have a vsco which is a photography app, and it seems she likes to take pictures of nature, and her eyes, along with friends and family. So, working o that assignment showed me that it would’ve been easier if I worked alone considering she did not post a lot, so I didn’t have a lot of information to go off of. So, if I worked alone, I would’ve been able to use my own Instagram or someone out there who has a lot of posts that show a story. 

The second assignment that was done as a team was the “Lost at Sea” assignment. This assignment was a team effort. You had to put your own individual ranking on whether it was important or not and then get with a group and tell everyone your rank, and they tell you there’s. So, after telling the group everyone’s ranks the next step was to record the Coast Guard’s ranking and put into your own chart. Then you write the numerical difference between yours and the Coast Guard. Then right the numerical difference between you and your teams. So, each person is going to have a different ranking so the numerical difference between your own number and then the team members number may be different. May be low or may be high. But working together in that way seemed unneeded. Calculating my number against the Coast Guard and then doing another retest or another step could’ve helped to. But I believed that the total score could’ve been better without the assignment being a team assignment. 

The effect of personality type on team performance explained all about teamwork. It explained that the personality has an essential role for the success of IS development team performance. Meaning that people’s personalities can help a team work better together. Team building and group dynamics: creating and fostering a culture of teamwork requires trust, collaboration, and accountability is another source that explains teamwork and trust within a team. In the passage it says "Darci understands that you can have great products, you can have phenomenal software, you can have the smartest people, but if they're not playing together, it's never going to get you ahead," Leamon says. It means that the smartest people can be in the group but if they don’t work together then they’ll never get it done. The point of the passage is about trusting your team and who you work with.  

In conclusion, going through the couple of team activities we have done in class have made me think that working with a group or a partner is always great. It helps with a lot of different things and allows you to finish whatever you’re working on with another set of eyes. However, in my opinion I believe that working independently suits me better so for the portfolio in AICE Media Studies I will be working on it independently.
